Draft a DRO Using the NYSLRS Template

Divorce and Your Benefits

All Domestic Relations Orders (DROs) are subject to review and acceptance by the NYSLRS Matrimonial Bureau. NYSLRS’ Divorce and Your Benefits information and the appropriate publication for the member’s tier and retirement plan should be carefully reviewed before a DRO is drafted.

DRO proposals may be prepared using the Domestic Relations Order (DRO) template, which has been developed by NYSLRS with guidance from the NYSLRS legal counsel. The template will generate a customized proposal based on a member’s tier, retirement plan and retirement status using specific information the member provides. Template selections must mirror the agreements reached between parties concerning the division of the pension benefits. While it’s use is not required, DRO proposals that are prepared using this NYSLRS template will be given priority review.

Draft a DRO proposal.

When completing the DRO template, please be sure to fill in all required fields, as indicated by an asterisk (*). It helps to use proper capitalization, as shown in the examples next to the fields.

An incomplete form cannot be saved. Once you have completed the form, click the “Create Printable DRO” button to generate your document as a Portable Document Format (PDF). Please note, additional information — such as the Participant’s (member’s) and Alternate Payee’s (ex-spouse’s) Social Security Numbers — must be written in after printing. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to save a completed DRO proposal for your own records.

See Submitting a DRO for instructions on sending the completed DRO proposal to NYSLRS.
