DiNapoli: Former Fire District Treasurer Accused of Stealing More Than $50,000

The former Crystal Beach Fire Department treasurer was arrested Thursday for allegedly stealing and spending more than $50,000 of public funds on tanning, TV and shopping sprees, according to State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

“This public servant pocketed proceeds from chicken dinner and pancake breakfast fundraisers and abused the faith and goodwill of the local community,” DiNapoli said. “This case will be prosecuted by the Ontario County District Attorney’s Office. I thank District Attorney R. Michael Tantillo and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Department for bringing this person to justice. My investigators and auditors will continue to aggressively examine fraud in local government.”

Michael Mason, 43, of Canandaigua, was charged with grand larceny in the second degree. DiNapoli’s auditors and investigators found that Mason took cash and charged to shop the Waterloo Premium Outlets, Dark Tan salon and Zale’s Jewelers. He spent $1,745 to pay his cable television bill and made $1,000 in purchases at Justice, a girls’ clothing store.

In addition, more than $7,500 in fundraising donations from three department barbecues and a pancake breakfast is unaccounted for.

Mason was arraigned in Canandaigua Town Court Friday and sent to Ontario County Jail on $5,000 bail. The joint investigation with the Comptroller’s Office and the Sheriff’s Department continues.
