State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced today that he has appointed Elliott Auerbach as deputy comptroller for the Division of Local Government and School Accountability.

Auerbach will head the division responsible for monitoring the finances of local governments and school districts. He will manage auditing and budget reviews, training local officials, assigning fiscal stress scores to local communities, and studying issues facing local governments. He will direct seven regional offices and a staff of more than 300.

“Having served four terms as Ulster County Comptroller and as a village mayor, Elliott has first-hand knowledge of the challenges faced by local governments,” DiNapoli said. “He has aggressively pursued fraud and waste in county operations and understands that strong fiscal controls ensure that taxpayer resources are used efficiently and effectively. He is the ideal choice to lead my efforts to hold local governments accountable, while offering them a helping hand to better serve taxpayers.”

Auerbach was first elected Ulster County Comptroller in 2009. He is the county’s chief auditing officer and responsible for the care, custody and control of a $330 million budget. Prior to this position, he was a three-term mayor of the Village of Ellenville and served as its manager from 2002 to 2009.

He is a graduate of Hofstra University.

He starts on May 16. His salary is $150,000.
