DiNapoli Applauds Verizon Decision to Produce Transparency Reports, Calls on AT&T to Follow Suit

Today, Verizon Communications Inc. announced that it would publish semi-annual online reports about the number of information requests it receives from the government of the United States and governments of other countries in which it does business. Additionally, the company indicated it will disclose details about the legal demands it receives.

Verizon’s action follows a shareholder resolution filed by Trillium Asset Management and other institutional investors requesting that the company produce semi-annual transparency reports.

New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, on behalf of the $160.7 billion New York State Common Retirement Fund and joined by Trillium, the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California and Arjuna Capital, filed a companion resolution at AT&T in November.

“Verizon deserves praise for responding to shareholder concerns and committing to issuing transparency reports,” DiNapoli said. “AT&T should follow its lead and disclose what customer information it shares with U.S. and foreign governments.”
