Administration of Vital Records (Follow-Up Review)
Outside of New York City, records of vital events such as births, deaths and marriages are maintained by local registrars who are overseen by the Department of Health. In our prior audit report 96-S-40, we examined the Department's administration of vital records and found that improvements were needed in record security and in the timeliness with which requests for records were processed and vital events were registered. We also found that the Department did not charge a higher fee when express delivery was requested for copies of vital records. In our follow-up review, we found that actions have been taken by Department officials to address some of the improvement opportunities identified in our prior report.
