New York City Transit: Monitoring Vendor Performance To Ensure the Availability of Subway and Bus Parts New York City Transit, which operates New York City's bus and subway systems, needs enough parts on hand to keep its 3,400 buses and 5,800 subway cars in safe and sound operating condition. We examined New York City Transit's monitoring of vendors that provide bus and subway car parts and found that many of the parts ordered by Transit officials are delivered later than the agreed upon delivery dates. Because of these late deliveries, and because of other factors such as weaknesses in inventory forecasting practices, parts are often unavailable when they are needed. As a result, buses and subway cars are either kept out of service for extended periods or returned to service unrepaired. We recommend that Transit officials improve their procedures for evaluating vendor performance and forecasting inventory needs.
