Controls Over Telephone
at Selected Campuses A total of 22 SUNY campuses
own and operate
their own telephone systems. We examined the controls over these
telephone systems at eight
campuses and found that improvements are needed. For example,
the campuses do not
always maintain adequate inventories of telephone extensions,
adequately restrict access to the
systems, adequately monitor telephone use, or take adequate steps
to restrict inappropriate
calls. We also identified weaknesses in campus procedures for
obtaining reimbursement for
personal calls. As a result of the many control weaknesses,
campus telephone systems are
more likely to be used for unreimbursed personal purposes.
