Purpose of Audit

The purpose of our audit was to evaluate District controls over claims processing and inventories for the period July 1, 2014 through May 31, 2016.

Background

The Port Washington Union Free School District is located in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County. The District, which operates seven schools with approximately 5,500 students, is governed by an elected seven-member Board of Education. Budgeted appropriations for the 2015-16 fiscal year totaled approximately $146 million.

Key Findings

  • Not all claims contained the required quotes, bids, or contracts.
  • The Board did not ensure that the claims auditor received the necessary training to carry out the claims audit policy.
  • A count of all stored goods was not conducted at least once a year.
