Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School District – School Lunch Operations (2015M-175)

Released: November 6, 2015 -- [read complete report - pdf]

Purpose of Audit

The purpose of our audit was to determine whether District officials were ensuring that meals offered to students were nutritious and prepared in the most economical and productive manner for the period July 1, 2013 through April 17, 2015.

Background

The Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School District is located in the Towns of Cherry Valley, Middlefield, Roseboom and Springfield in Otsego County and the town of Minden in Montgomery County. The District, which operates one cafeteria that services approximately 490 students and 100 employees, is governed by an elected seven-member Board of Education. Budgeted appropriations for the school lunch fund for the 2014-15 fiscal year were approximately $285,000.

Key Findings

  • Meals cost more to prepare than the revenue generated by meal sales.

Key Recommendations

  • Closely monitor cafeteria operational costs and, where possible, implement plans to control costs.
