We examined payments the State University of New York at Stony Brook (Stony Brook) made to Schindler Elevator Corporation (Schindler) under contract C001406 for elevator and escalator maintenance services provided by Schindler for the period July 1, 2009 through October 31, 2009. We found the documents Stony Brook officials use to track preventive maintenance performed do not allow officials to effectively monitor the contract and do not provide assurance that Schindler performed all the required preventive maintenance Stony Brook contracted for to keep its elevators and escalators safe and in optimal operating condition. Stony Brook officials also could not provide reliable documentation to support all payments to Schindler were appropriate. As a result, Stony Brook may have paid up to $16,000 for maintenance services Schindler did not complete according to contract terms.
