Reimbursement of Hospital Costs by Clinical Practice Management Plans

The SUNY Health Science Centers at Brooklyn, Stony Brook and Syracuse operate teaching hospitals. Patients at these hospitals are treated by faculty from the Centers' medical schools. These faculty belong to clinical practice management plans, which are required to reimburse certain costs incurred by the teaching hospitals in relation to the private patients treated by the faculty. We examined the reimbursement of these costs at the three health science centers and found that the costs may not have been fully reimbursed. We recommend that the centers improve their cost accounting practices and ensure that all reimbursable costs are in fact reimbursed.
