Port Authority of New York and New Jersey
Administration of the TransitChek Program (Follow-Up Review) In 1987, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey established the TransitChek program, in which participating employers in the New York City metropolitan area may provide their employees with a nontaxable benefit of as much as $65 a month in mass transit tokens/tickets or specially designed TransitCheks that can be used to purchase tickets, tokens and passes from participating mass transit agencies. In our prior audit report 96-S-8, we found that the program could have been marketed more effectively and program costs may have been higher than necessary. In our follow-up review, we found that action has been taken to market the program more effectively. However, additional actions are needed to lower program costs and further improve the marketing efforts.
