New York City Transit: Controls Over Automated Fare Cards In the New York City bus and subway system, fares may be paid with automated plastic cards that are issued in denominations ranging from $1.50 to $80. We examined New York City Transit's controls over the processing, handling and sale of these fare cards, and identified a number of weaknesses. For example, related duties are not adequately separated among different employees, defective cards are not adequately accounted for, and card inventories are not periodically verified. When we tried to verify inventory records, we identified significant discrepancies. We recommend that New York City Transit officials strengthen controls over the fare cards.
