State Education Department

Nonpublic School Aid Program (Follow-Up Review)

Nonpublic schools are reimbursed by the State Education Department for the expenses incurred in complying with certain recordkeeping and reporting requirements mandated by New York State. In our prior audit report 95-S-34, we identified excess reimbursements at selected schools, and estimated that the overpayments statewide could exceed $1 million annually. We recommended that Department staff more closely oversee the reimbursements provided to nonpublic schools. In our follow-up review, we found that Department officials have made some progress in implementing our prior recommendations, but additional progress is needed.
