Unemployment Insurance Benefit Payment Activities

During the six months ended December 31, 1997, the Department of Labor issued 3.6 million unemployment insurance benefit checks totaling about $808 million. On a daily basis the Comptroller's on-site audit staff examine the establishment of unemployment insurance claims and the disbursements to the claimants. The audit staff also periodically identify New York State employees who have yet to repay excess unemployment benefits that they received in the past. During the six months ended December 31, 1997, the audit staff prevented $44,629 in overpayments and $36,726 in underpayments to claimants, and identified 373 State employees who owed about $401,000 in excess benefits. During the six months, the Department recovered about $221,000 from such employees.
