State Education Department
School District Health Services School districts outside New York City, Buffalo and Rochester are required by State law to provide certain health services to students. In the three exempt cities, student health services are governed by local requirements. We compared the health services provided to students in the three exempt cities to the health services provided to students in 12 other districts. We found that fewer health services are provided to students in the three exempt cities. We also examined the health services required by law and found that the requirements need to be updated to conform with current medical practices. State Education Department officials have made proposals that would update the requirements and would make the three exempt cities subject to the requirements. We support these proposals and suggest additional changes in the requirements. We also recommend that the Department take a more active role in monitoring student health services.
