New York City Department of Parks and Recreation

Maintenance of Parks

We audited the park inspection practices of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. City parks are to be inspected annually by Department staff. However, we found that many of the parks were not inspected annually. As a result, the parks were less likely to be clean and safe. Many of the parks we visited had unacceptable conditions, such as damaged play equipment and unsafe conditions. Some of these unacceptable conditions had been identified by Department inspectors several weeks before our visits, but the conditions had yet to be corrected by Department staff. We noted that legal claims had been filed against the City regarding some of the uncorrected conditions. We made several recommendations for improving park inspection practices.
