Long Island Rail Road: Low Ridership Trains (Follow-Up
Review) In our prior audit report 94-S-67, we determined that many trains
carrying ten or fewer passengers are operated by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). We
estimated that, during the year we reviewed, the cost of operating these trains exceeded the
revenue generated by the trains by about $941,000. We recommended that LIRR officials
consider revisions to the train schedule that reduce such inefficiencies without compromising
service. In our follow-up review, we found that LIRR officials are in the process of
implementing our recommendation.
