Unemployment Insurance Benefit Payment Activities

The Department of Labor processes unemployment insurance payments for those who have lost their jobs. During the six months ended June 30, 1996, the Department issued 5.2 million unemployment insurance benefit checks totaling about $1.2 billion. On a daily basis the Comptroller's on-site audit staff examine the establishment of unemployment insurance claims and the disbursements to the claimants. The audit staff also periodically identify New York State employees who have yet to repay excess unemployment benefits that they received in the past. During the six months ended June 30, 1996, the audit staff prevented about $348,000 in overpayments and about $107,000 in underpayments to claimants, and identified 301 State employees who owed about $324,000 in excess benefits. During the six months, the Department recovered about $217,000 from such employees. 95-D-46
