New York City Transit: Control and Protection of
Microcomputers (Follow-Up Review) New York City Transit operates New
York City's bus and subway system. In our prior audit report 93-S-27, we examined the
extent to which New York City Transit's microcomputer hardware, software and data were
protected against loss, damage and abuse. We found that access to critical functions was not
limited to authorized users only, software unrelated to Transit operations was installed on
some microcomputers, several microcomputers were stolen or infected with viruses, and plans
had not been developed to provide for backup microcomputing capabilities in the event of an
emergency. We made several recommendations for improving New York City Transit's
microcomputer operations. In our follow-up review, we found that progress has been made in
implementing these recommendations.
