State University of New York
Staff Study on the Educational
Opportunity Center Program (Follow-Up Review) SUNY administers nine
Educational Opportunity Centers, which provide vocational, academic and remedial training to
educationally and economically disadvantaged students. In our prior report 93-D-16, we
compared the performance of the nine Centers to one another and identified widely varying
levels of efficiency and effectiveness. We also noted that program success was significantly
overstated at the two Centers we visited and about $1 million was spent in making
renovations at one Center with very little to show for the efforts. We recommended that
much of these funds be recovered and standards be established for monitoring the
performance of the Centers. In our follow-up review, we found that good progress has been
made in implementing these recommendations.
