Gun Controls at Selected State
Agencies and Public Authorities Employees at many State agencies and
public authorities are authorized to carry guns. We examined the controls over these guns at
the Division of State Police, the Department of Correctional Services, the Division of Parole,
the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey,
and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. We found that these State
agencies and public authorities had adequate controls for acquiring, issuing, storing and
disposing of guns. However, we noted that improvements could be made in some of the
recordkeeping systems. We also noted that the Division of State Police and the Office of
Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation did not always dispose of confiscated guns as
required by law.
