Emergency Assistance to Families Program (Follow-Up Review)

Under the Emergency Assistance to Families Program, the Department of Social Services provides financial assistance to needy families in emergency situations. In our prior audit report 94-S-58, we examined the procedures used by the Department to ensure that this assistance was provided to eligible families only. We found that, while procedures had been developed for verifying family eligibility, these procedures often were not followed. We also identified weaknesses in Department controls over same-day emergency payments and weaknesses in procedures for recovering overpayments of emergency assistance. In our follow-up review, we found that the Department has made progress in implementing the recommendations contained in our prior report.
