Department of Health

Oversight of Environmental Health Programs (Follow-Up Review)

The Department of Health is responsible for inspecting hotels, children's camps, public water supplies and food service establishments, as well as overseeing other environmental health programs. In our prior audit report 93-S-61, we tried to evaluate the economy and efficiency of the Department's oversight, but were unable to make any conclusive determinations because the Department's data was unreliable. Our analysis of this data disclosed significant variations in inspection productivity in different counties. However, because of the unreliability of the data, we could not determine whether the variations indicated genuine differences in productivity. We recommended that the Department improve the reliability of its data. In our follow-up review, we found that good progress has been made in implementing our prior audit recommendations.
