Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities
Equipment Disposal at Developmental Centers
Since 1987, the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD) has closed several developmental centers and, by the year 2000, plans to close its remaining centers. We audited OMRDD's plans for disposing of the equipment in these centers and found that considerable improvement was needed. For example, when we visited a center that was about to close, we found a significant amount of usable equipment in storage with no plan for disposing of this equipment. When we visited a center that had been closed for several years, we found more than 2,000 items of equipment in storage. We recommended that the OMRDD central office more actively monitor equipment disposal efforts.
