Faculty Utilization (Follow-Up Review)

In our prior audit report 90-S-89, we found indications that faculty at SUNY campuses were not always efficiently deployed. For example, many full-time faculty spent fewer than nine hours a week in the classroom, and when we examined records relating to a sample of this faculty, we found little or no evidence that they performed any research, administrative duties or other sanctioned nonteaching activities that justified their light teaching loads. In our follow-up review, we found that SUNY officials made progress in implementing our recommendations from the prior audit. For example, the officials issued guidelines relating to faculty utilization. However, additional action was needed to ensure that faculty deployment was efficient. 95-F-30
