Wadsworth Center for Laboratories and Research: Environmental Laboratory Approval Program
The Environmental Laboratory Approval Program was established to ensure the reliability of the environmental testing performed by laboratories that either operate in New York State or test samples collected in New York State. To ensure this reliability, laboratories are certified to perform environmental testing by the Wadsworth Center for Laboratories and Research,
which is administered by the Department of Health. We examined the Center's certification activities and found that improvements were needed. For example, the Center did not inspect all laboratories annually, as required, and did not always take timely action to decertify laboratories that did not demonstrate the required proficiency. We also identified uncertified laboratories that performed environmental tests. We made several recommendations aimed at strengthening the Center's oversight of environmental testing.
