Housing Preferences for Disabled Veterans (Follow-Up)

Issued Date
February 19, 2013
Agency/Authority
Homes and Community Renewal - Division of Housing and Community Renewal

Purpose

To determine the extent of implementation of the two recommendations included in our initial audit report, Housing Preference for Disabled Veterans (2010-S-42).

Background

In November 2007, the Private Housing Law was amended to require housing companies to provide disabled veterans with a preference in the admission to Mitchell-Lama housing developments.  Our initial audit, issued on May 26, 2011, examined whether disabled veterans received the preference.  We found disabled veterans did not receive the intended housing preference.  The individual Mitchell-Lama housing companies failed to follow the Division’s guidance concerning the law, and the Division failed to monitor the housing companies adequately. We recommended that the Division train their Housing Management Representatives to properly review housing company compliance and to increase monitoring of housing company compliance.

Key Finding

  • Division officials have made significant progress in correcting the problems we identified in the initial report. Both of the recommendations have been implemented.

Key Recommendation

  • Division representatives need to be more vigilant in following through on deficiencies identified.
