Oversight of Criminal History Record Checks for Service Provider Employees (Follow-Up)

The Office of Mental Health (Office) provides inpatient and outpatient services to approximately 500,000 New Yorkers annually. The Office may be assisted by not-for-profit service providers, but all prospective employees of these providers who would have close or unsupervised contact with patients, are required by law to undergo a background check as a condition of their employment. In audit report 2008-S-87, we audited the Office's oversight of the service providers' compliance with this requirement and found that the oversight provided reasonable assurance the providers were complying with the requirement. However, we did make two recommendations. When we followed up with Department officials, we found that they have implemented both recommendations.
