Banking Department

Controls Over Equipment and Vehicles (Follow-Up Report)

The New York State Banking Department is responsible for regulating and supervising more than 3,300 financial entities. In audit 2007-S-62, we found that the Banking Department purchased more computer equipment than it needed. As a result, some of the equipment was rarely, if ever, used. We estimated the Banking Department could save approximately $150,000 through a more efficient assignment of computer equipment. We also identified weaknesses in the Banking Department’s inventory and vehicle usage records, and found the Banking Department was not using available technology to ensure that computers assigned to employees for home use were being used for authorized purposes only. When we followed up on these matters, we found that Banking Department officials have made significant progress in correcting the problems we identified in the initial report.
