Oversight of Adult Care Facilities (Follow-Up Report)

Adult care facilities provide temporary or long-term residential care to adults who are unable to live independently. The Department of Health is responsible for overseeing certain types of adult care facilities. In audit 2006-S-7, we examined whether the Department was inspecting these facilities and investigating complaints about these facilities in accordance with requirements. We found that, while the Department generally completed inspections within the required time frame, it did not always start inspections within the required time frame or issue inspection reports and investigate complaints in a timely manner. We recommended certain improvements be made in the Department’s oversight of adult care facilities, and when we followed up on these matters with Department officials, we found that they had implemented our recommendations.
