Department of Motor Vehicles

Complaints Against Regulated Entities (Follow-Up Report)

The Department of Motor Vehicles (Department) regulates automobile dealers, motor vehicle repair shops, and other types of businesses involving motor vehicles. The Department is responsible for investigating formal complaints filed against these businesses. In audit 2006-S-18, we examined the timeliness of these investigations and found that they were generally initiated and resolved within the timeframes required by regulations. However, we identified delays in some investigations and weaknesses in some of the Department’s recordkeeping practices. We recommended that certain improvements be made in the Department’s administration of complaint investigations. When we followed up on these matters, we found that Department officials made some progress in correcting some of the problems we identified.
