Division of Municipal Supply Services: Central Storehouse Inventory

The New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services provides support services to other City agencies. Its Division of Municipal Supply Services manages a central storehouse that is responsible for purchasing, stocking and distributing items ordered by City agencies. We examined the controls over inventories at the storehouse and found that improvements were needed. In particular, inventory levels at the storehouse were not independently verified and inventory-related duties were not adequately separated among different employees to prevent certain employees from having too much control over the inventories. We also found that reported investigations of inventory discrepancies were not documented and appropriate corrective actions were not taken. We recommended that certain actions be taken to strengthen the controls over inventories at the central storehouse.
