Duplicate Medicaid Payments to Clinics (Follow-Up Report)

In audit report 2006-S-35, we examined the Medicaid payments made to clinics over a five-year period to determine whether any clinics were paid more than once for the same medical service. We identified six such clinics. These clinics had submitted duplicate claims to the State’s Medicaid claims processing system, and the duplication was not detected because of control weaknesses in the system. The six clinics were overpaid a total of nearly $336,000 for the duplicate claims. We recommended that the overpayments be recovered and the claims processing controls be strengthened to prevent such overpayments in the future. When we followed up on these matters with officials at the Department of Health, we found that they had taken some action to implement our audit recommendations, but additional action was needed.
