Oversight of Adult Care Facilities

Adult care facilities provide temporary or long-term residential care to adults who are unable to live independently. The Department of Health is responsible for overseeing certain types of adult care facilities. We examined whether the Department was inspecting these facilities and investigating complaints about these facilities in accordance with requirements. We found that the Department generally completed inspections within the required time frame. However, it did not always start inspections within the required time frame, or issue inspection reports and investigate complaints in a timely manner, thereby delaying corrective action. We recommended certain improvements be made in the Department’s oversight of adult care facilities.
