The Renaissance Charter School

Financial Management Practices

The Renaissance Charter School is located in Jackson Heights, Queens and has 498 students enrolled in kindergarten through grade 12. The School, which was established in September 2000, is one of 23 schools chartered by the New York City Department of Education and one of the five that were created by the conversion of a pre-existing public school. In 2005, the School’s charter was renewed by the New York State Board of Regents. We audited the adequacy of the internal controls established by School officials over selected areas of financial operations We found that the controls were generally adequate, but noted that improvements were needed in certain areas, particularly contracting and procurement. We also determined that modifications needed to be made in the composition of the School’s Board of Trustees, as the percentage of Board members who were School employees exceeded a limit that was specified in the School’s charter.
