New York City Department of Education

Textbook Inventory Practices (Follow-Up Report)

In audit report 2003-N-3, we examined the inventory controls over textbooks at selected New York City high schools. We found that the inventory records at the high schools were not always accurate. We also found that some high schools appeared to have excess textbooks on hand, but did not make an adequate effort to alert other schools so that the schools could avoid unnecessary purchases. We recommended that certain actions be taken by the New York City Department of Education to address these matters. When we followed up with the Department, we found that progress had been made in correcting the problems we identified, but additional improvements were still needed.
