State Education Department

Cost-Effective Practices in Public Schools (Follow-Up Report)

According to Section 215-c of the State Education Law, which was enacted in 1996, the State Education Department is required to take certain actions to promote cost-effectiveness in New York State’s public school system. In our initial audit report 2001-S-59 , we examined the Department’s compliance with these requirements. We found that the Department initiated some of the actions required by the legislation, and took other actions that were consistent with the overall objectives of the legislation. However, the Department did not initiate all the required actions, and generally did not follow through to complete the actions that were initiated. We recommended that certain actions be taken by the Department to enable it to comply with the clear directives contained in the legislation. When we followed up on these matters, we found that limited progress had been made by the Department in implementing our audit recommendations.
