Security Measures Relating to the Transportation of Hazardous Materials

The Department of Transportation performs roadside safety inspections of commercial motor carriers. Certain additional inspection procedures are to be performed when carriers are transporting hazardous materials (i.e., gasoline, explosives, chemicals and radioactive materials). We examined the effectiveness of these additional inspection procedures, and we also examined the role of the Division of State Police in providing support to these types of inspections. We found that improvements could be made in the inspection procedures. Due to the sensitivity of these matters, our detailed findings and recommendations were not included in our report, but were presented separately to agency officials.
