Department of Labor

Public Employee Safety and Health Program (Follow-Up Review)

The Department of Labor is responsible for enforcing workplace safety and health standards at non-federal public workplaces. The Department investigates accidents and complaints, and performs routine inspections of workplaces. In our initial audit report 2000-S-49, we examined the effectiveness of these actions and identified numerous instances in which complaints were misclassified, investigations were delayed, and case processing was inefficient. We also determined that Department inspectors were not adequately trained and Department inspection units may not have been adequately staffed. In our follow-up review, we found that considerable progress had been made in implementing the recommendations contained in our initial report.
