Higher Education Services Corporation - Tuition Assistance Program

Drake School of the Bronx

During the 1998-1999 through 2000-2001 academic years, Drake School of the Bronx certified $5.8 million in Tuition Assistance Program awards. We disallowed $4,758,054 of these awards as well as $81,621 for awards that related to other academic years. The total $4,839,675 was disallowed because numerous students were incorrectly certified as eligible for the awards. Many of these certifications were incorrect because the courses provided by the school were not provided in an educationally sound manner, as defined by the State Education Department. For example, courses were taught by unlicensed teachers and courses did not provide the minimum number of instructional hours required by law.
