New York State Board of Elections

Maintenance and Repair of the Voting Equipment

The State Board of Elections oversees county boards of election in administering and enforcing laws relating to elections in New York State. We examined the Board’s oversight of local practices for maintaining voting machines, training machine technicians, and developing contingency plans for voting machine problems on elections days. We found that the State Board and local boards could do more to establish and enforce uniform standards for voting machines and the training of machine technicians. We also found that improvements are needed to provide greater assurance that contingency plans will be implemented as written.
