Energy Conservation in Housing Developments (Follow-Up Review)

The Division of Housing and Community Renewal oversees publicly-funded housing developments that are operated by privately-owned housing companies. In our prior audit report 2000-S-6, with the assistance of a consultant with expertise in energy conservation, we evaluated the potential for savings in energy costs at these housing developments. We estimated that savings of as much as $16 million a year could be realized if buildings heated by electricity were converted to gas heating systems and if better energy management practices were adopted by housing companies with gas or oil heating systems. In our follow-up review, we found that actions had been taken to implement the recommendations contained in our prior report.
