Private Duty Nursing Services for Medicaid Recipients (Follow-Up Review)

Private duty nursing services are more comprehensive and continuous than other types of nursing services. In our prior audit report 99-S-16, we examined the Medicaid payments made for private duty nursing services over a four-year period. We found that service providers were overpaid as much as $5.9 million, mainly because payments were made for duplicate and excessive claims. We recommended that these payments be investigated, all overpayments be recovered, and controls be improved to prevent such overpayments in the future. In our follow-up review, we found that action had been taken to implement the recommendations contained in our prior report.
