Workers' Compensation Board

Office of Fraud Inspector General: Management of Fraud Investigations

The Workers' Compensation Board oversees the adjudication and payment of compensation claims relating to workplace injuries. Potentially fraudulent claims are investigated by the Board’s Office of Fraud Inspector General. We examined how these investigations were managed and found that certain improvements were needed. For example, we identified long delays in the initiation and resolution of investigations, and determined that the investigators were assigned far more cases than workers’ compensation fraud investigators in other agencies. We also found that allegations of fraud were not always processed effectively, and information about the investigations was not accurately maintained on the management information system.
