Disability Determinations for Public Assistance Recipients

Public assistance benefits are processed by local social services districts. Most public assistance recipients are required to seek employment or receive job-related training in order to maintain their benefits. However, employment requirements may be modified for recipients with mental and physical disabilities. The Department of Labor is responsible for monitoring the local districts’ disability determination process. We examined certain aspects of the Department’s oversight of this process. We concluded that the actions taken by the Department in overseeing this process provided adequate assurance that the districts were following all applicable laws, rules and regulations.
