Child Protective Services Program (Follow-Up Review)

In the Child Protective Services Program, which is overseen by the Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), local social services districts investigate reports of child abuse or maltreatment. In our prior audit report 98-S-36, we examined whether these investigations were performed as required in four districts. We found that, in some investigations, the required actions either were performed late or were not performed at all. For example, in some instances, the preliminary assessment of the child's safety, which is supposed to be completed within a week, was not completed until nearly a year after the investigation began. We recommended that OCFS more closely monitor local district investigation activity, and in our follow-up review, we found that our recommendations had generally been implemented by OCFS.
